BioChemistIn biochemistry, Eicosanoids—sometimes spelled Icosanoids—act as messengers throughout the Central Nervous System of every living Cellular Tissue in the Body. One can see the importance of these molecular structures throughout these complex systems right at the start. (Perhaps this a time to pause and give kudos to the amazing workings of this most magnificent Creation! It is easy to become transfixed amidst the awe of it all. The inner workings of our Bodies are truly a case for the word ‘awesome!’)

These fascinating Eicosanoids work as a network of signaling molecules by controlling  the many complex Bodily systems—mainly in Immunity.

Eicosanoids bind to diverse molecules found on the surface of Cells. When they receive chemical signals from the ‘outside’, they control the Cell by binding to a receptor molecule. This is how Cells are directed to do certain things, like divide, die, or allow specific substances to enter or exit the cellular wall. These Eicosanoids, are found in every tissue of the body—and they come from either Omega 3 or Omega 6 Essential Essential Fatty AcidsFatty Acids (E.F.A.s).

Wikipedia has this to say: “Essential Fatty Acids, or EFAs, are Fatty Acids that humans and other animals must ingest because the body requires them for good health but cannot synthesize them. The term “essential fatty acid” refers to fatty acids required for biological processes but does not include the fats that only act as fuel.”

E.F.A.s control the Cardiovascular System, Blood Pressure & Triglycerides to name a few. The proper balance of these important Fats affect all functions throughout the Body. To put in more relative terms, this is—at this time right now—directly effecting the house in which I, you live. Naturally, we all want what is best for our system. I don’t know about you, this leads me to more Eat Healthfully.


Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids are essential Poly-Unsaturated fats commonly found in Marine and Plant Oils. They seem to help to reduce all sorts of symptoms that have been enhanced due to eating poorly over time. There have been stories of relief in such troubles as High Blood Pressure, Depression, A.D.H.D. and even Joint problems when Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids are introduced into a consistent dietary change.


The Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids are also essential polyunsaturated fats. When Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids are introduced Healthy Skin and the ability of the Blood to clot have become noticeable outcomes. The Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids are generally Pro-Inflammatory—Omega 3s are much less so. These particular Eicosanoids are called upon when symptoms appear—as in an allergic response to something—calling for needed release of Natural Histamines during an inflammatory ‘flare up’. This is interesting to note, “Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, such as Aspirin, perform by ‘down regulating’ this balance of Eicosanoid Synthesis”.


Unlike Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids and Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids, Omega 9 Essential Fatty Acids are not classified as Essential Fatty Acids. They are necessary—it’s just that they can be manufactured by the body so we do not need to bother about being sure to ingest them.
However, in order to be able to make Omega 9 Essential Fatty Acids, our Body must be prepared by having enough Un-saturated Fats through the presence of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids and Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids.


Omega 9 Essential Fatty Acids make up the monounsaturated Nervonic Acid which—as it eludes to—plays an important role in the bio-synthesis of Nerve Cells in the ‘white matter’ of the Human Brain. Since, these functions are controlled via signalling pathways through the Nervous System, there is evidence suggesting that regular intake of these most vital  E.F.A. Nutrients can ease symptoms in Psychiatric disorders. Now, isn’t this a useful thing to know?

Some common everyday sources of Essential Fatty Acids include Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds, Hemp Seed, Walnuts, Beans (Soybeans are especially high and are recommended, assuming, of course, you can find non-G.M.O. See Below to further this discussion.),

Fish (Fish Oils, Squid Oils, Krill Oil), *Algal Oil…

WinterSquash…Most Squash, Winter & some Summer varieties, & many Plant Oils provides us with concentrated sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids.


*Algal Oil comes from Algae from the Ocean. It is a good source of Docosahexaenoic Acid. ‘DHA’ is one of the very important Omega 3 Fatty Acids and the most abundant in the Brain and Retina.


The Brains’ ability to transport synaptic relays depends upon this particular Omega 3 Fatty Acid (DHA) being supplied to it. A DHA deficiency is associated with cognitive decline. It has been noted that DHA levels lower neural cell PS and increase neural cell death. DHA are reduced in the brain tissue of severely depressed patients.




D.H.A. levels are high through Breast Milk, regardless of dietary choices. 

As yet, I am unclear about the actual recommended daily allowance determined for the intake of Essential Fatty Acids. There are many ways to find out. I just never see the need for myself. It seems easy enough to keep up with when eating a Natural diet of Essential Fatty Acids rich Foods into my diet daily…

This may come off as sounding somewhat cynical, though it really must be said. It is highly recommended, that we all be more In-Tune with our Body. This is easy enough to do and I notice how easy it is to put it off. We all need to take the time needed & listen to our Body.

BodyListeningYes, we all need to listen more—using simple relaxed awareness—to the subconscious realm of our physical selves. This is Nature at its’ best! When we arrive, having come full circle with the gift of our life here, on Earth, we have reached our own unique sense of what ‘Home’ is. When we are comfortable in our skin we are at home. When we are in tune with our bodies, a whole new world opens to us and for us. And then, a much more giving realm presents itself to us—to exist in and along side with. Wow, to actually become one with our bodies—What a concept!

Only when we take the time needed and actually listen, can we know what our Body is telling us. When we are lacking or saturated with a substance—our Bodys’ know. When we listen to our Body—we know.

I only ask when my Body is Healthy enough to with-stand the probable stress that comes from ‘splurging’.

Generally speaking, when I feel led toward Food sources, I eat them. Key word, being ‘Food’. Generally speaking, I have trust in my innate Natural sense this way. I have done what is needed to align my thinking with Nature. Now, my thoughts are more in alignment with which Foods Nourish and what substances to stay away from. This Naturally leaves me feeling taken care of. My thinking is in the right direction about what Foods work best for me, generally speaking…

… And generally speaking, this all may be so, however, having been raised in this same environment I warn about, this environment that seems to be doing its’ best to keep us all from being tuned in to Nature—I wrestle with programs in my mind that encourage me to enjoy things that are not in my Bodys’ best interest. So, if / when during those times when I give in to the S.A.D. (Standard American Diet) by allowing in certain foods which otherwise I’d know better not to, I bless the moment and cherish the experience. I receive all I can from the experience and get back to being on purpose with what I know my Body really needs to be its’ Healthy, Optimal Self… generally speaking.


When / if there is doubt and I feel the need to know for sure, I ‘self test’ using the art of Kinesiology. Muscle Testing is available for every body. We do not need to rely on out side sources to tell us what we need to know about the inner workings of our Body, our Selves. By doing all we can about learning what works best for us, individually, we can always know the Cellular needs of our physiology and act accordingly. This is a very workable plan to stick with. For me, it just doesn’t get any simpler! It’s simple, neat and Natural!

SquashPersonally I do not make a point of eating Essential Fatty Acids. I do however, notice a strong attraction toward Foods rich in these important Nutrients, especially when I have not had them in a while. I watch and Essential Fatty Acidsallow my body to tune into its’ needs. My ‘feelings’ take me toward the Seeds, Squash, Greens or Fish, etc.,. to which then, I ‘pig-out’.

Dark KaleGreen Leafy Vegetables, like Kale and Broccoli are also sources of Omega Essential Fatty Acids.

As one can see there is a wide array of Foods that have this well respected Nutrient called Essential Fatty Acids.

While in tune, our Body speaks clearly, directing us to exactly what it is that will fulfill Its’ needs.
It seems true for every body that when we Eat more Naturally, much of the guess work is taken out of being sure we are eating the right Foods and when—And also, if we are getting enough of thee Essential Nutrients.

As mentioned, Soybeans (if you can find a source that is non-G.M.O.), are also a good Natural source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids…

…However in this book, ‘The World’s Healthiest Foods’, author George Mateljan has this to say about Soybeans no longer being the best source of high quality nutrients:

Omega 3 Fatty Acids


“A special note about SDA soybeans: Late in 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval for inclusion of a new genetically-modified form of soybean oil called “SDA soybean oil” on the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) List. Monsanto – the company which patented the new soybean oil – took genes from a flower (Primula juliae) and from red bread mold (Neurospora crassa) and inserted them into soybeans in such a way that an omega-3 fatty acid called stearidonic acid (SDA) could be produced by the soybeans and become a part of the soybeans’ fat content. Since SDA is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid, its added presence in these soybeans and soybean oil might be considered by some consumers as a good way to get increased omega-3 nourishment. However, we do not recommend genetically modified foods of any kind as a way to support better nourishment, and SDA soybeans would be included in our list of genetically modified foods that are best avoided.”

George Mateljan of ‘The World’s Healthiest Foods’ also states, “With both Olive Oil and Fish, stay away from frying. Frying with Olive Oil will damage the Omega-3s and deprive you of their health benefits. So will the frying of fish—even fish that contain omega-3s. In a research study that compared consumption of fried versus non-fried fish and risk of atherosclerosis, consumption of fried fish was found to offer no health protection to the study participants, even when the fish contained omega-3 fats.”

Foods in their most Raw form is always the better way to go in as far as keeping Nutrients most bio-available for our body to assimilate.
Once cooked, as with most, Foods lose a high percentage,
if not all, of their Essential Fatty Acids.


Omega3FattyAcidsThere are so many Natural Healthy ways to keep up our intake of these Essential Nutrients. By Eating a consistent share of good quality Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts and Seeds, in other words—Eat more Naturally—we will acquire these vital tools without too much concern for proper amounts. And add in some Fish if you choose, like, Mackerel, Sardines, Scallops, Salmon, Herring, Trout, Tuna, Krill, Anchovies, etc. a couple times weekly.



Remember that taking the time to Listen to our Body is important. And also, remember to take the ‘guess-work’ out of wondering about certain Foods (and things) by learning the art of Kinesiology and Muscle Testing for assurance.

Now, you are all set for life and Naturally so – leaving you also ‘good to go’.
