FRIDAY MAY 13 1983
Friday May 13 1983
On Friday, May 13, 1983–30 years ago today–I went for a walk through the woods near my home. The path I was following opened onto a meadow that was resplendent with spring wildflowers. Evening was beginning, and the angle of the sun shining on the field added emphasis to the wildflowers. I was awed by the beauty before me.
Anni–known as “Ma Anand Tarsha” at the time–and I were scheduled to be married the next day. A friend who lived nearby was an ordained minister. He had agreed to perform the ceremony at a place called “The Longhouse.” I thought to myself “If I had only known how beautiful this would be, I would have arranged to be married here, now.”
“Why not?” resounded through my head. “Why not here, now?” Without another thought I turned and bounded through the field toward home as fast as my 40 year old body would permit. When I arrived, nearly a mile away, I was so winded that I could barely express my plan to Anni. She caught my excitement, and agreed.
We jumped in our car and quickly drove off to find our minister and two friends to be witnesses. As “fate” would have it, they happened to be all together, and joined in the excitement that we were sharing with them. Within minutes we were all en route to the meadow.
On the evening of Friday the thirteenth in May, 1983 under the setting sun in a field of wildflowers, Anni and I began our commitment to each other. The idea of marriage had begun merely as a means for Anni to take advantage of my health insurance coverage. Having had two unsuccessful marriages before, I had no intention of ever having another “wife.” Anni and I were just good friends who loved doing things together.
We are still good friends who love doing things together, AND, for the past 30 years she has been the most loving wife a man could hope for. I am grateful to “the Universe” for “tricking” me into this lasting marriage. “Jai Bhagwan!”
